Deep dives
Declining engagement with news
The podcast discusses how many people are disengaging from major news sources, including social media, especially in wealthier Western countries. This disengagement has grown over the years, with around 15% of the United States and Japan population disengaging from news sources. Additionally, a larger group of people are selectively avoiding certain types of news stories, particularly those that are difficult or depressing.
Decreasing trust in news
The podcast explores how trust in news has declined globally, with only 42% of respondents stating that they trust most news most of the time. This decline in trust is particularly significant in several countries. The report highlights that trust has eroded in many countries, partially due to an overwhelming coverage of COVID-19 and politics. It emphasizes that these findings pose challenges for the news industry as important stories are the ones driving some people away from news altogether.
High level of trust in public service media
The podcast mentions that public service media in Western Europe, such as the BBC in the UK and broadcasters in Nordic countries, are the most trusted news outlets. They are valued for their impartiality and longstanding reputation. However, in countries where public service media is perceived as influenced by political or commercial interests, trust is lower. Commercial broadcasters, especially in Western Europe, also enjoy high levels of trust.
Stagnation in news subscriptions
The podcast reveals that the number of people paying for online news has remained static at 17%, with Germany, Australia, and Norway experiencing growth in subscriptions. However, subscription growth is becoming more challenging as a significant portion of interested news consumers have already subscribed. The report also highlights the impact of financial constraints, such as inflation, on people's willingness to continue or cancel non-essential subscriptions.
