The Life and Ideas of Origen

Origen of Alexandria, a prominent Christian philosopher, made significant contributions to early Christian thought. He was born in 185 CE in Alexandria and received a strong education in grammar and classical literature. Origen's father, who educated him, was martyred by the Romans, prompting Origen's desire for martyrdom as well. However, his mother prevented this by hiding his clothes. Origen began teaching at the age of 18, and his educational methods were a subject of speculation. He focused on textual criticism, scriptural commentaries, and systematic works. He developed the hexapla, which compared various translations of Hebrew texts. Origen's views on Christology and the restoration of all things created controversy. He proposed a subordinationist Christology and the apocatastasis, the idea that all will be restored, even the devil. His teachings were sometimes interpreted as gnostic or contrary to orthodox Christianity. Origen's allegorical interpretation of scripture and emphasis on the ineffable nature of higher truths contributed to the development of esotericism within Christian thought.
