Editors must have confidence, trust their instincts, and preserve the author's story in posthumous projects.
Deep dives
Working on Grandpa's Book: Piecing Together the Story
Dan Lechworth shares the challenges he faced while working on his grandpa's book, 'We Flew Out and Walked Back.' The memoir, filled with letters from his grandpa's time as a bombardier in World War II, required piecing together the narrative of his experience behind enemy lines based on limited information. Dan had to synthesize his grandpa's presentations about the rescue story and combine them with the letters to create a cohesive account of his journey. Despite the challenges, Dan' s personal connection and the treasure trove of letters made it a meaningful and emotional project.
Working on Dad's Book: Organizing and Editing
Dan also tackled his dad's book, 'Now, This Ain't No Shit,' a memoir about his 21-year career as a US Navy helicopter pilot. The project faced a different set of challenges as Dan had to work with his dad's disorganized notes filled with bold, highlight, italic text, and random images. It took time to organize the material and transcribe it into a readable version. Dan navigated the grief and styled the book as best as he could, making the editing decisions on his own.
Posthumous Editing Advice: Trust Yourself and Honor the Story
Dan offers advice for editors working on posthumous editing projects. He emphasizes the importance of having confidence in oneself as an editor, especially when the original author is no longer available for input. Dan encourages editors to trust their instincts and tell the author's story, even if it includes unflattering details. Honesty and relatability are crucial in honoring the author's legacy. Dan's own experiences highlight the significance of posthumous editing and the power of storytelling in preserving memories and experiences.
One of the best things about being an editor is the interaction you get to have with your client. Developing this rapport can elevate your work immensely, but what do editors do when their client has passed away? What liberties is an editor allowed to take? How much is too much when editing in this way? What is an editor to do when they need clarification?
We discuss all this and more in Episode 11: Posthumous Editing.
