Deep dives
The Berry Market Boom
The berry market is experiencing significant growth with the U .S. berry market worth $9 billion, up over 40% in the past five years. Not only are berry sales higher than other fruits, but they are also growing rapidly. Driscoll's, a leading berry producer, has introduced 'Swedish Batch' berries, genetically modified to be extremely sweet and priced at a premium, making up 20% of blueberry sales.
Retail Trading Trend
Retail investors have seen a surge in trading activity, with Gen Z starting to trade stocks at an early age compared to previous generations. The retail trading market has grown, with about 18% of U.S. trade volume coming from retail investors. Access to information and the ease of trading through mobile apps have contributed to the sustained interest in retail investing.
Product Recalls Impact
Product recalls have been on the rise due to stricter regulations and advanced technologies that enable quicker detection of issues. Companies facing recalls incur various costs such as product replacement, PR, legal fees, and more. Recalls can have catastrophic financial consequences for businesses, primarily damaging their reputation and consumer trust.
Investors are starting to trade stocks younger and younger. On this week’s TLDR, we look at what’s behind this retail trading boom — and why it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. And, how berries became so expensive, and why everyone (especially parents) keeps on buying them. Plus, what product recalls really cost companies.
