Deep dives
Distinct Speaking Patterns in the Book of Mormon
Distinctive speaking patterns of individuals in the Book of Mormon are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, revealing unique differences in the speaking patterns of the approximately 150 individuals featured in the book. Statistical research conducted by Professor John Hilton and his grandfather shows statistical evidence that Joseph Smith did not write the Book of Mormon solely based on specific word patterns in the text, affirming the multi-authored nature of the book.
Research on Individual Speaking Styles
Research on the speaking styles of various characters in the Book of Mormon showcases how speakers like Jacob and Nephi have distinct ways of expressing themselves, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Statistical analysis demonstrates that different speakers in the Book of Mormon have unique voices, supporting the idea that the book is a multi-authored work with diverse contributors, such as Nephi, Jacob, Mormon, and Moroni.
Use of Wordcruncher Tool in Analyzing Text
The usage of the Wordcruncher tool enables researchers to identify words or phrases spoken with distinctive frequencies by different individuals in the Book of Mormon. By linking specific words to individual speakers, researchers can unveil patterns unique to each character, revealing how characters like Alma stand out through their distinct use of small words and questions in their discourse.
Harmonization of Voices in the Book of Mormon
The harmonization of voices in the Book of Mormon is exemplified by how later Book of Mormon prophets like Alma draw upon the words of earlier prophets such as Abinadi when addressing specific concerns. This harmonic use of scripture demonstrates a thoughtful integration of past teachings into present challenges, showing a deep reverence for prophetic words and a reliance on scriptural guidance in teaching and counseling.
Some 150 voices unite in the Book of Mormon to provide a clear witness of the Savior Jesus Christ. What insights might we gain from examining their distinctive voices? And what meaning can studying unique voices of the past lend to our lives today? In this episode BYU professor of Ancient Scripture John Hilton III answers such questions in discussing his recent book Voices in the Book of Mormon—Discovering Distinctive Witnesses of Jesus Christ. Dr. Hilton details some of the linguistic characteristics of major speakers, from Nephi and Mormon to Jacob and Jesus Christ. He also explains how voices speak in harmony, especially as later prophets use teachings from their predecessors. Finally, Dr. Hilton asks us to consider applying Elder Boyd K. Packer’s question, “therefore, what?” as we examine who is speaking, to whom, and for what purpose, and how such unique voices might teach principles relevant to our lives.
