The surge in gun sales in 2020 attracted both conservative and liberal buyers, but gunsellers expressed concerns about liberal gun owners who may not prioritize gun politics or invest in firearms training, potentially compromising the cause of gun rights.
Deep dives
Conservative Gunsellers' Political Orientation
The author interviewed conservative gunsellers in the United States who identified as politically conservative, including Republicans, libertarians, constitutionalists, and Christian conservatives. These gunsellers embraced a gun-centric politics, using guns as a solution to address issues beyond self-defense, such as government overreach and underreach. They viewed guns as a linchpin for their conservative stance, characterized by armed individualism, conspiracism, and partisanship.
Diversity of Gun Buyers and Concerns Among Gunsellers
In 2020, there was a surge in gun sales in response to the pandemic and lockdown orders, attracting not only conservative buyers but also more liberal buyers. Gunsellers celebrated the diversity of new gun owners, including women, racialized minorities, and sexualized minorities. However, they expressed concerns about liberal gun owners who appeared to be following trends rather than committing to the principles of individual rights and responsibility. Gunsellers worried that these new gun owners might not prioritize gun politics or invest in firearms training, potentially compromising the cause of gun rights.
Addressing Gun Violence and Gun Culture in the US
The US faces significant challenges in addressing gun violence due to the cultural and political divide surrounding gun ownership. With close to 50,000 gun deaths each year, the debate on gun control remains contentious. The author suggests that innovative interventions such as community violence intervention, trauma-informed responses, and initiatives involving gun sellers could contribute to reducing gun violence. These approaches require resources, material support, and a willingness to engage in a different kind of discussion around guns in the US. The author emphasizes the importance of transforming the political culture and cultivating dialogue to find solutions to the complex issue of gun violence.
Guns: Laurie Taylor talks to Jennifer Carlson, Professor of Sociology at Arizona State University and author of an in depth study of gun sellers in the US. In 2020 they were on the front line of an unprecedented surge in gun purchasing against a backdrop of pandemic insecurities and political polarisation. Interviewing 50 sellers from four states, 84% of whom were on the right of the political spectrum, she found they were not simply selling guns, but also a conservative vision. How then did they react to a new wave of gun buyers which included women and sexual minorities, some of whom were liberal? Did this vindicate or challenge their gun centric world view? And what are the possibilities for a positive transformation in America's harmful gun culture when only one third of the population are opposed to the personal ownership of hand guns? They're joined by Andrew Nahum, historian & Keeper Emeritus at The Science Museum whose latest work considers the impact of the gun on progress, both intellectual and industrial, from the Enlightenment to the American West, the Cold War and contemporary gun culture. How did so many rifles come to be held in private hands and what does the ongoing preoccupation with the creation of ever more effective firearms tell us about human creativity?
