Deep dives
Prediction 1: AI Adoption in Schools
AI will continue to increase in schools through grassroots collaboration, but significant adoption will require government funding and action planning. K-12 public education systems, with their decentralized nature and multiple pressing priorities, lack the resources and time to effectively implement AI. The end of funding grants and the absence of clear models and resources from federal and state governments further hinder AI implementation. However, there are bright spots with trailblazing schools, districts, and organizations leading the way in exploring and implementing AI solutions to address educational challenges despite limited resources and guidance.
Prediction 2: Exponential AI Innovation
AI innovation is accelerating at an unprecedented rate. Technological advancements, such as the exponential increase in computing power and the number of parameters in AI models, are driving this rapid growth. For instance, AI models today require billions of times more computation compared to just a decade ago. The pace of innovation poses a challenge for education and government systems. If they do not adapt quickly, it could lead to a breaking point, necessitating radical changes in decision-making and approaches.
Prediction 3: Expansion of AI Conversations
Mainstream conversations on AI will extend beyond generative AI models like chat GPT. Other types of artificial intelligence, such as artificial capable intelligence (ACI), AI agents, and human-AI integrations, will gain prominence. ACI goes beyond generative AI by performing complex tasks connected to other technologies, like self-driving cars or autonomously building websites. AI agents operate independently of human drivers and can exhibit sophisticated behaviors. Human-AI integration involves wearable technology and robotics that allow individuals to interact with AI using their minds. These developments signify the growing breadth and potential impact of AI beyond generative models.
Prediction 4: Deep Fakes and Misinformation
Deep fakes, AI-generated media that can deceive and manipulate, will continue to be a source of tension. Schools and governments will prioritize addressing and educating about deep fakes and misinformation. The potential harm caused by deep fakes, including inciting violence, swaying voters, and scamming individuals, highlights the need for regulation and safeguarding against their misuse. Lessons, curriculum, and conversations must equip young people with an awareness of deep fakes and strategies to mitigate their impact.
Prediction 5: Video Games and Social Media as AI Interaction
Video games and social media will become the primary means through which young people interact with AI. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and popular games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite already incorporate AI elements. These interactions introduce young users to AI and shape their perceptions and expectations. Schools have an opportunity to embrace this trend and leverage it to enhance classroom engagement, rather than resisting it. Understanding and addressing biases and preconceived notions about AI that result from these interactions will be crucial.
