The Virtue of Mercy
Mercy is a virtue that combines pity and action. It is a divine attribute but can also be practiced by humans. The first dimension of mercy is pity, where one empathizes with the misery of another. The second dimension is taking action to alleviate that misery. Mercy is expressed through alms deeds, which include spiritual and corporal works of mercy.
Charity and Love of Neighbor
Charity, the love of God poured into our hearts, is the foundation of mercy. It is through charity that we love both God and our neighbor. Loving our neighbor is not optional but a commandment. Charity involves willing and doing good to others. Love of neighbor is a matter of precept, requiring us to express our love in tangible ways.
Responsibility in Giving
When approached by someone in need, our responsibility in giving is twofold. First, we should give from our excess, once we have taken care of ourselves and those dependent on us. Second, the person in need must have a genuine need. We are not expected to give to every need, but primarily to those closest to us or who present themselves to us. Giving beyond what is required becomes a matter of counsel, facilitating our own spiritual progress and salvation.
