Deep dives
Hope for a Peace Movement among Palestinians
Despite the dire conditions in Gaza, there is hope for a peace movement among Palestinians. The current situation, marked by displacement, limited access to basic amenities like water and electricity, and high levels of poverty, is not working for Palestinians. Countries like Egypt and Jordan, which have made peace with Israel, enjoy more normal conditions and greater economic and social development. Palestinians can benefit from economic and social progress by reaching a peaceful coexistence with Israel, which would improve their lives and offer a viable solution to the current hardships.
Challenges in Palestinian Society
There are challenges within Palestinian society that hinder the development of a peace movement. These include anti-Semitism, deep-rooted tribal honor culture, and the religious orientation of the conflict. A significant portion of Palestinians hold anti-Semitic beliefs and view the conflict as a religious and territorial struggle between Muslims and Jews. Additionally, speaking out against Hamas, the governing body in Gaza, can be dangerous and met with repression. Overcoming these challenges and fostering a peace movement will require addressing these underlying issues and promoting understanding and tolerance among all parties involved.
In this preview from our members-only livestream, John Aziz joins Adaam and Mike to talk about his reflection on escalating suffering, persistent support for Hamas, and aspirations for peace.
