Deep dives
Embracing Artistic Roots and Professional Growth
James Weisar’s journey into the world of art began in Pleasanton, Texas, where his passion was ignited by the 1994 live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. He pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art at the University of Texas at Austin, focusing on printmaking, while gaining valuable experience through various roles at local art institutions. His time as a production manager at the Mexic-Arte Museum taught him about nonprofit operations, where he collaborated on exhibits and co-created the Chingo Zine, focusing on Latinx artists. This combination of artistic passion and practical experience laid a foundation for his future endeavors in both the art and startup worlds.
Navigating the Shift to Startups
Transitioning from the nonprofit sector to a startup environment presented James with unique challenges and learning opportunities that expanded his skill set. He served as the first exhibit technician at the DoSeum, an interactive children’s museum, where he developed systems for maintenance and exhibit management. This role exposed him to a more dynamic and fluid work culture, starkly different from the structured environment of traditional museums. Embracing this transformation, James learned about standard operating procedures and the importance of adaptability in a rapidly changing workspace.
Coping with Imposter Syndrome
Entering the startup realm also brought about feelings of imposter syndrome for James, as he adjusted to a younger workforce and heightened responsibilities. He recognized the necessity of communicating openly with colleagues and that asking questions was essential for growth, despite initial discomfort. James reflected on learning to value insights from others and the importance of collaboration in overcoming self-doubt. This realization became a crucial part of his experience, helping him build confidence in navigating the unpredictable nature of startups.
Balancing Art and Professional Life
While pursuing a career in startups, James maintained his dedication to artistic expression, participating in events like Five Points Festival in New York to showcase his work. He appreciated the financial benefits from working in a startup, which allowed him to invest time in his passion for creating art and exploring new technologies. James recognized the importance of finding a balance between his professional obligations and his commitment to the art world, illustrating how the two spheres can coexist. Ultimately, his journey underscores the value of taking risks and seizing opportunities in both his career and creative endeavors.
