Deep dives
The focus on M25 investing in the Midwest
M25 invests in the Midwest because they have an unfair advantage there, understanding the culture and network. They believe there is an underserved opportunity in the region and want to be good stewards of capital for their LPs.
The importance of faith in their work
M25 incorporates their faith by not investing in anything destructive and being a confidant and ally to their founders. They value access and opportunity and find fulfillment in helping others achieve their purpose. They also prioritize surrounding themselves with mentors for wisdom, perseverance, and accountability.
The impact of downturns and advice for young investors
M25 believes venture capital was in an unsustainable phase before the market downturn. They see value in investing during a downturn, as great opportunities arise, especially in early-stage startups. They advise young investors to seek wisdom from mentors, stay humble, and remember their identity is more than their career or current losses.
The origin of the name M25
M25 derives from Matthew 25, specifically the parable of the talents. M25 aims to be both a master and servant by entrusting capital to entrepreneurs who take appropriate risks and create value, and also by being stewards of their LPs' capital. They want to see both their entrepreneurs and LPs flourish.
We all want our careers to be an endless upward trend, but that’s not always the case.
Mike Asem, who took a less-than-traditional road to investing, has experienced the wonderful highs and the challenging lows that come with being a venture capitalist.
While the founding partner of M25–a midwest-focused early stage investment group–has plenty of success stories to share, he’s also graciously agreed to join us to talk about some of the less glamorous aspects of stewarding capital.
Throughout the episode, he and our hosts, John Coleman and Luke Roush, open up about difficult questions like “how do you know when to let a venture go?” And “how do you protect your identity when you feel like a failure?”
Tune in to hear how we can wrestle through tough realities while maintaining hope in something bigger than our circumstances.
