India, the world's top mango producer, faces significant challenges in exports. Infrastructural issues in Uttar Pradesh hinder progress, but the state is making strides to enhance its export potential. The discussion highlights government initiatives aimed at overcoming these obstacles, especially in the wake of increasing competition from China. Can Uttar Pradesh turn things around to boost India's mango exports?
India's struggle with mango exports stems from inadequate infrastructure and high spoilage risks during transportation from production to processing facilities.
Uttar Pradesh is addressing these export challenges by establishing new facilities, enhancing infrastructure, and promoting unique red mango varieties to boost global competitiveness.
Deep dives
Challenges in Mango Exports
India, despite being the largest mango producer in the world with 20 million tons annually, exports less than 0.5% of its total production due to severe infrastructural challenges. Uttar Pradesh, a key mango-producing state contributing over a quarter of India's output, lacks the necessary facilities for preserving mangoes for export. The delicate nature of Indian mango varieties necessitates radiation treatment and temperature-controlled storage, which are not readily available in UP. Consequently, mangoes are transported to cities with these facilities, risking spoilage during transit and raising costs due to the need for air freight for timely delivery to distant markets.
Emerging Solutions and Future Prospects
In response to these challenges, Uttar Pradesh is initiating significant infrastructure improvements to enhance mango export capabilities, including the establishment of a radiation treatment plant near Jevar International Airport. This facility aims to streamline the export process, reduce delays, and cut costs, thereby making Indian mangoes more competitive in global markets. Moreover, the state is promoting its unique red mango varieties, which are rich in antioxidants, positioning them as health-beneficial products to appeal to health-conscious consumers worldwide. With these developments, India’s mango growers are optimistic about increasing exports in 2024, potentially surpassing China in the process.
