Apologist and theologian Jimmy Akin discusses the concept of separation from God and whether it is possible to lose salvation through mortal sin. He explores biblical passages and examples to provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between God and believers.
Certain biblical passages do not conclusively prove that we cannot willingly choose to separate ourselves from God.
The verses in Romans 8:38-39 should not be interpreted as evidence that we cannot separate ourselves from God.
Deep dives
Key Point 1: Scripture passages do not prove that we cannot separate ourselves from God
Although certain passages in the Bible (John 6:37, 39; John 10:27-29; Romans 8:38-39) indicate that we cannot be separated from God, they do not provide evidence that we cannot willingly choose to separate ourselves from God. For instance, John 6:37 emphasizes that Jesus will not cast us out, but it does not imply that we cannot voluntarily leave Jesus. John 6:37 also states that the Father gives people to Jesus, but Judas Iscariot's betrayal demonstrates that one who was once given to Jesus can still be lost. Similarly, John 10:27-29 highlights the security of Jesus' sheep, but it does not exclude the possibility of them leaving voluntarily. The passages alone do not support the idea that we cannot separate ourselves from God.
Key Point 2: The verses in Romans do not affirm that we cannot separate ourselves from God
While Romans 8:38-39 asserts that nothing can separate us from the love of God, it does not address the possibility of us voluntarily choosing to separate ourselves from God. In other writings, Paul suggests that such separation can occur (see Day 302). Thus, the verses in Romans 8:38-39 should not be interpreted as evidence that we cannot separate ourselves from God. The passages cited in this podcast episode do not unequivocally establish that we cannot willingly choose to separate from God.
DAY 326
CHALLENGE
“We know we can’t lose our salvation by committing mortal sin because Scripture says we can’t be separated from God (John 6:37, 39, 10:27–29, Rom. 8:38–39).”
DEFENSE
None of those biblical passages show that we cannot separate ourselves from God.
John 6:37 states: “All that the Father gives me will come to me; and him who comes to me I will not cast out.” Jesus will not cast us out, but that doesn’t mean we can’t leave Jesus voluntarily.
John 6:39 states: “this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at t…
