The episode delves into forsyt's initiatives towards advancing early-stage interdisciplinary technology in areas like quantum computing, molecular machines, biotechnology, health extension, genetic and space tech. The focus is on tree-like structures to fund progress, where fellows and technology trees lead diverse projects like atomically precise manufacturing and asteroid mining. The aim is to integrate various domains and enable crowdfunding for desired technology paths.
The history and evolution of the Foresight Institute over 35 years are discussed. Initially oriented towards futurist ideas like cryonics, the institute has expanded to emphasize technologies such as molecular and nano-tech, space exploration, and longevity. Activities include supporting projects like molecular machines for precise manufacturing and exploring bionic angles for longevity and secure human-computer interactions.
The concept of technology trees (tech trees) as comprehensive digital maps of technologies and the collaborative efforts to populate them are highlighted. The episode discusses tools for continuous updates, domain expert feedback, and identifying bottlenecks for support. It also explores potential decentralized funding models, using crypto mechanisms, challenge-based funding, and integrating prediction markets to drive technological progress.
A competition has been established to create an app for crowdsourcing and coordinating collaborations in a decentralized and permissionless way. The goal is to encourage individuals who excel in coordinating and vision-building rather than product creation to take ownership. This approach aims to ensure continuous optimization and dedication to the project's success, leveraging the power of ownership and incentivizing entrepreneurial-minded individuals.
Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) with low voting participation face potential vulnerabilities, as minority activists can influence decision-making processes. Recognizing critical voters who possess the power to sway proposals is crucial in assessing governance systems. The focus on token distribution and voter engagement reveals the impact of contributors versus investors, shedding light on the need for transparent governance mechanisms and increased participation to prevent centralization and capture of decision-making powers.
Foresight is exploring a DAO to fund progress in its core focus areas, e.g. by funding Foresight fellows and tech trees:
Led by domain experts, and ultimately open for crowd-sourcing, we're building trees for challenges in longevity, atomically precise manufacturing, brain-computer interfaces, private ML, and asteroid mining. Long-term, these trees may integrate across domains, allowing different funders to chart desired paths through the tech forests.
Our current plan is for researchers to submit challenges to make progress on their node. Entrepreneurs bid with project proposals. Domain-experts and funders decide what the DAO funds via reputation-weighed voting.

Session summary: (425) Tech trees & DAOs to advance ambitious science & tech - Allison Duettmann - YouTube
The Foresight Institute is a research org
anization and non-profit that supports the beneficial development of high-impact technologies. Since our founding in 1987 on a vision of guiding powerful technologies, we have continued to evolve into a many-armed organization that focuses on several fields of science and technology that are too ambitious for legacy institutions to support.
Allison Duettmann is the president and CEO of Foresight Institute. She directs the Intelligent Cooperation, Molecular Machines, Biotech & Health Extension, Neurotech, and Space Programs, Fellowships, Prizes, and Tech Trees, and shares this work with the public. She founded Existentialhope.com, co-edited Superintelligence: Coordination & Strategy, co-authored Gaming the Future, and co-initiated The
Longevity Prize.
