The importance of physical literacy
The podcast emphasizes the significance of physical literacy and the lack thereof in society. It highlights the need for a strong physical base and the impact it has on other aspects of life, such as spiritual and philosophical exploration.
Ethics and values in movement practices
The podcast explores the connection between movement practices and ethics, underscoring the importance of cultivating strong moral values alongside physical abilities. It acknowledges the potential dark side of practices if not approached with a clear moral compass.
The role of spirituality in movement

The Importance of Balancing Structure and Play in Movement Training
The podcast episode explores the importance of finding a balance between structure and play in movement training. It challenges the traditional approach of focusing solely on strength and preparation before incorporating patterns and improvisation. While constraints and drills are necessary to identify missing components and build skills safely, the speaker emphasizes the need for a more playful and open approach to training. By constraining tasks safely, athletes can experience a wider range of benefits and adapt to complex movements. The goal is to create adaptive and capable movers who can excel in diverse movement practices.
Long-Term Perspectives and Anchor Practices in Movement Training
The episode discusses the significance of having a long-term perspective and anchor practices in movement training. It highlights the importance of choosing skills that have both close relatives and asymmetric relationships to maximize transferability. The speaker emphasizes the need for sustained practice and finding an anchor practice that brings joy and sustains the habit of training over time. This anchor practice acts as a foundation from which other areas of movement practice can be explored. The episode also acknowledges the value of opening doors for learners by introducing them to new practices, allowing them to discover where they feel most at home within the movement spectrum.
Welcome back to the Evolve Move Play Podcast!
Today we’re joined by Joseph Bartz
Joseph Germany, to an artistic family of writers, musicians and people working in the theater. He went through the Waldorf method of schooling, which outside of the usual subjects also puts a lot of value into crafting, music and dancing.
At 13 years old, Joseph started delving into various disciplines of physical practice. Starting with martial arts and strength training, his interests expanded to include parkour and aspects of natural movement such as tree climbing and doing most things barefoot. He also became interested in wilderness training and primitive skills, which he has been learning with Uwe Belz.
Joseph would take his passion for these physical practices and build a career around them, he has taught countless workshops and helped thousands of students deepen their knowledge and relationship to movement.
Today he’s joining us to talk about a variety of topics, including the deep meaning that can be obtained through developing a robust ecology of practices, and how the process of building a skillful body should not only enhance your physical abilities, but your strength of character as well.
I really enjoyed having Joseph on the show, and hopefully we’ll be able to continue our chat in the near future. If you also enjoy the conversation, be sure to support the channel with a like, subscribe, and share.
