This podcast explores the concept of the subtle body in ancient Greek culture, including soul-flight practices. It discusses the lack of unified conception of the human soul and delves into the lore of soul manipulators in Western esotericism. The evolution of the concept of pneuma and Platonists' beliefs regarding the soul and body are also explored. The podcast examines the soul's descent and ascent through the astral spheres and the concept of the soul vehicle in Platonist philosophy.
The ancient Greek soul travelers known as Yathro Mantes practiced soul-flight, influencing later subtle body ideas.
Platonists believed in the existence of noetic bodies, which were associated with perception and prepared the soul for its true noetic home.

Ancient Greek Soul Travelers: Yathro Mantes
In ancient Greek culture, there were soul travelers known as Yathro Mantes who possessed the ability to project their soul from their body and embark on journeys in disembodied form. These individuals were associated with theories of metempsychosis and soul flight. While they may not have had a sophisticated theory of the soul as a unified entity, their exploits were influential in the development of later subtle body ideas.
The Theory of Ochima Penuma in Late Antique Platonism
Among Platonists from Platonism onward, there was a widespread belief in the existence of a third entity called Ochima Penuma, which served as a bridge between the soul and the body. This theory aimed to reconcile Plato and Aristotle's ideas about the soul by positing an intermediary entity. While the scholarship on Ochima Penuma might not be complete, evidence suggests that it was considered a vehicle for the soul to move and perceive in the cosmos. Its nature varied between different thinkers, but it played a significant role in discussions of purification, eschatology, and posthumous punishments.
Noetic Bodies in Platonism
Platonists believed in the existence of incorporeal, noetic bodies that coexisted with the soul. These bodies were associated with organs of perception and had the ability to sense and apprehend objects in the noetic world. Platonius proposed that these bodies were purified through inward and outward disciplines, preparing the soul to approach its true noetic home. However, the ideas of noetic bodies seem to be unique to Platonius and were not widely discussed by other Platonists.
The Soul Vehicle in Porphyry's Philosophy
Porphyry developed a theory of the soul vehicle, which allowed the soul to coexist with the body and navigate the spatialized cosmos. This pneumatic body facilitated the soul's descent and ascent and could acquire astral influences during the journey. It enabled the soul to be subject to stellar influence and allowed for the possibility of posthumous punishments. Although the theory of the soul vehicle is often attributed to Porphyry, some scholars argue that Numinous of Appamea also played a significant role in shaping these ideas.
We discuss the soul-flight practices found in our testimonies to the ancient Greek iatromanteis, Middle-Platonist and other early testimony to the theory of a soul-vehicle, and the subtle-body theories of Plotinus and Porphyry.
