Deep dives
Repeal of Assam's Muslim Marriage Law
The Assam Cabinet's decision to repeal the state's Muslim marriage law, a nearly 90-year-old act, marked an important step towards implementing a uniform civil code in the state. Originally enacted in 1935 for voluntary registration, it later became compulsory for Muslim marriages and divorces. The rationale behind repealing the law was primarily to curb child marriages, as the old act allowed underaged brides and grooms to be registered, aligning with Muslim personal law. The move triggered discussions on potential implications and the shift to registering marriages under the special marriage act.
Progress in Eliminating Kalazar Disease
India's achievement of reporting less than one case per 10,000 population marks progress in eliminating Kalazar, the second deadliest parasitic disease after malaria. The steady decline in Kalazar cases, with 595 cases and four deaths reported last year, highlights the country's efforts. Steps taken include plastering walls to block sandfly breeding sites, indoor residual spraying, and enhanced testing and treatment tracking. Sustaining these efforts and maintaining low case numbers over three consecutive years are crucial to receiving WHO's elimination certification.
Seat Sharing Alliance between SP and Congress in Uttar Pradesh
The Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress finalized a seat sharing ratio in Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, allocating 17 seats to Congress out of the total 80 seats. Issues arose over seat distribution due to differing viewpoints on parliamentary seat ownership between the parties. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra played a pivotal role in resolving the deadlock, leading to the agreement on the allocated seats, including influential constituencies like Amethi and Varanasi.
