Writing clearly calls on different sets of mental processes – those involving creative, nonlinear thought, and those involving willpower, structure, discipline, etc. They have to collaborate like players on a team – when they’re out of whack one way or another, either the creativity suffers or the productivity suffers. It’s a pain in the tush at times. Then there’s the first process of “self-editing”—which is essential. During self-editing, all of our worst attributes come out: impatience, self-doubt, despair, perfectionism - sometimes all at once!
