Deep dives
Victor Hovland's Driver: Longer Length for More Distance and Accuracy
Victor Hovland has defied conventional wisdom by using a longer driver, a Ping G425 LST at 45 and three-quarters inches, instead of going for a shorter length for accuracy. He led the field in driving accuracy during recent tournaments, proving that longer drivers can still be accurate. The decision to go longer came after testing different lengths and finding that the 425 LST performed well for him. The longer length increased his ball speed, launch angle, and spin. While it may have increased his right miss, the overall gain in yardage made it a worthwhile choice. This could be an option worth considering for players who are already accurate but want to add more distance to their drives.
Victor Hovland's Irons: Transition from Changing Setups to Full Set of Ping i210
Victor Hovland went through a series of iron setups, trying different models, combinations of long and short irons, and even playing a full set of blueprints at one point. However, he has now settled on a full set of Ping i210 irons. The i210 irons provide the forgiveness and performance that Victor needs, especially in the short irons, where he felt they performed exceptionally well. His swing dynamics work well with the technology in the i210, helping him hit the ball higher, keeping it in the air longer, and providing consistency and forgiveness throughout the set.
Victor Hovland's Wedge Modifications: Glide 2.0 Bent to 60 Degrees
Victor Hovland started using a Ping wedge last year and went through a process of testing different models before settling on the Ping Glide 2.0. He uses a TS (low bounce) option, but bends it to 60 degrees, increasing the effective bounce. This allows him to open up the clubface and play a higher degree of difficulty shot around the green. Despite struggling with his short game in the past, Victor was always willing to take on challenging shots and work on his ability to open up the face. This dedication, coupled with the modified wedge, has contributed to his improvement in his short game.
Victor Hovland's Dependable Setup and Trust in Pink Equipment
Victor Hovland has found a dependable setup with his Ping equipment, including a longer driver, a full set of Ping i210 irons, and a modified Ping Glide 2.0 wedge. His trust in his equipment and his willingness to test and adapt has been crucial in his success on the course. While he once experimented with different setups, he now has a solid foundation that suits his game. The longer driver has provided him with more distance and accuracy, while the i210 irons deliver forgiveness and consistency throughout the set. Overall, his trust in his equipment, coupled with his dedication and skill, has led to his impressive performance on the PGA Tour.
