Deep dives
The Border Crisis and Biden's Policy
Joe Biden's open-border policy and executive actions have sent a message that the southern border is open for illegal immigration. As a result, there has been a surge in the number of people crossing the border, with 302,000 in December alone. The House passed a border bill (HR 2) on May 15th, but it has been languishing in the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has never touched the bill. A select committee was formed to negotiate a bipartisan deal, but it lacks immediate funding to secure the border and includes provisions that could codify catch and release for certain groups of people.
The Need to Secure the Border
Securing the border should be the first step in addressing the immigration issue. Rather than passing more laws, the focus should be on enforcing existing laws. A tri-partisan deal could be reached without requiring Joe Biden to do anything, as he has already taken numerous actions to open up the border. The proposed bill would only perpetuate the influx of immigrants and codify their entrance into the country, hindering efforts to address the root issue.
Tennessee's Approach to Governance
Tennessee has implemented successful strategies in governance by emphasizing local decision-making power and addressing problems at the local level. Initiatives like school choice have empowered local school systems, and there is a focus on engaging citizens to address issues such as education, infant mortality, and crime. Tennessee's strong economy and balanced budget are a result of their commitment to being good stewards of taxpayer money and not relying on deficit financing. Other states can learn from Tennessee's approach to effective governance.
Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks to Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee about the real reason that blue states love the influx of migrants into their sanctuary cities; the current state of U.S. border policy under President Joe Biden; the 94 executive actions he has used to open the border, leading to an increase in illegal immigration; concern over the perception that Biden is not in charge; how small government and having no state income tax have led to the success of Tennessee's government and economy; and much more.
