Michelle Hobgood came into my life as my health coach. With over 15 years in the fitness industry, keeping me accountable on my wellness journey was second nature to her. And frankly, she continues to inspire me, which you'll soon find out. But, what I didn't know about Michelle at the time was that she was fighting her own health and wellness battles…and then some.
Michelle is fit, feisty and has an infectious laugh that you just can't help but love. At first meeting, you'd never know she is the mom of an adult son with Autism. You also would miss that she is in a multicultural marriage. And likely, it wouldn't dawn on you that she faces unconscious biases every day; professionally and personally.
On this episode of HIListically Speaking, Michelle shares more about her own journey on why being considered a "strong, black woman" can sometimes set the stage for biases we don't even realize we are creating. But also, this intimate conversation opened some doors where there were once walls. Doors to a better understanding that if we spend more time listening to one another, we can learn to turn awareness into action in a positive and productive way...for all.
