16. Augmented Reality beyond the hype. The good, the bad and the ugly
Augmented Reality is not the same as Virtual Reality and Mixed Reality. All of these technologies are somehow related and provide for many different applications. But they are not exactly the same.
AR overlays digital information on real-world elements. AR keeps the real world central but enhances it with other digital details, layering new strata of perception, and supplementing your reality or environment.
Getting AR right is a massive challenge. Especially the hardware.
But the way the media talks about AR only creates more confusion about where this technology is, and where it can go next.
So I sat down with David Bonelli, to talk about what AR really is, what its applications are today, what challenges exist, and where it is going from here.
David is a Subject Matter Expert with regards to (brace yourself): Mechanical, Optomechanical, System Level Architecture, Nano-Projectors, and Display Technology for AR Head Mounted Displays(HMD), Near-eye Displays (NED), and HUD. He is the CEO of Pulsar, a Network of Augmented Reality and Optics Engineering Experts - consulting to bring products to life and projects to fruition, and has consulted for projects ranging from AR for pilots training, to workspace visualization, to Real Estate design visualization and many more.
He loves his craft, he is equal parts a scientist and an artist, and he shared very valuable knowledge during our interview.
Learn where AR is, beyond the hype.
