Ep.14 Joseph Pickens—Christianity, The Idolatry of Narrative & Becoming Through the Death of God
A conversational journey between friends that weaves between exploration of what's present and challenging questions borne out of Christianity, the death of God and our narratives.
We explore Joseph's intellectual and spiritual path out of Christianity and map it onto the broader movement we both witnessed from reliance of expert authorities (in the IDW) to collective sensemaking and community. Breaking the 4th wall of the podcast we talk about how external pressures affect the intimacy of conversation and the real ecstasy that arrives from letting go. Drawing on our Christian backgrounds and engagement with the work of John Vervaeke, Joseph shares insights into how we tend to repeatedly make idols of our narratives, sense of self and even God. Drawing on Terrence Mckenna, Nietzsche & my work on the metapractitioner we explore a way of being that goes beyond narrative in a dialectic dance with direct experience. Joseph maps the similarities in the death of God and the psychedelic experience—reconceiving of heaven and hell. We end with reflection what it means to become a parent to your home when the culture is going through a messy marital divorce.
~This was a dialogue like no other with a deeply integrative and intimate flavour. I look forward to another SenseSpace with Joseph. Connect with him at @josephdpickens~
