Deep dives
The Life of Epictetus
Epictetus was born a slave in Herapolis, Greece, in the first century AD. He acquired a passion for philosophy while still a slave and studied stoic philosophy under Misonius Rufus. After gaining his freedom, Epictetus taught in Rome until he was banished by Emperor Domitian, and he later lived in Nicopolis, Greece. Epictetus never wrote anything down, but his teachings were documented by his student Arian. His philosophy emphasized the importance of living a virtuous life, finding happiness within oneself, and accepting one's circumstances calmly.
Philosophy as a Way of Life
For Epictetus, philosophy was not just a subject to study, but a way of life. He believed that individuals should strive to maintain inner peace and independence from external circumstances beyond their control. Epictetus emphasized taking responsibility for one's own actions and choices, and he encouraged individuals to maintain discipline and work towards their goals consistently. He believed that true happiness came from within and could be achieved by aligning oneself with the mind of God.
The Importance of Bearing and Forbearing
Epictetus emphasized the importance of learning to bear and forbear. He believed that individuals should bear hardships and challenges without becoming crushed or depressed, understanding that they have been given the faculties to overcome them. Likewise, individuals should learn to forbear, resisting temptations and desires that hinder their progress towards a virtuous life. Epictetus encouraged individuals to accept their lot in life or work towards making it better, and to focus on what they can control rather than becoming consumed by things beyond their control.
Epictetus is one of my favorite stoic philosophers. From his wit to his straightforwardness, I enjoy his works immensely. From his humble beginnings as a slave just trying to survive to his influence on emperors and generals, he has earned his place in history. I truly hope you are enjoying the Harvard Classics!
