Deep dives
The rise and fall of the New Atheist movement
The New Atheist movement gained traction in the mid-2000s, but eventually lost steam as there was a lack of agreement among its leaders in terms of direction and values. The movement's dismissive and often arrogant tone turned people away, and its inability to answer deeper questions about meaning and purpose left many unsatisfied. This decline has opened the door for a new conversation about God and Christianity, as more secular thinkers are recognizing the value of Christian ideals and the limitations of atheistic worldviews.
Signs of a Christian renewal
There are signs of a Christian renewal and an increasing openness towards Christianity. Notable conversions, such as that of high-profile individuals like Jordan Peterson and Paul Kings North, demonstrate a shift in thinking about God and Christianity. These secular thinkers are offering fresh perspectives and making it intellectually plausible for people to consider Christianity again. The meaning crisis in our culture, along with the limitations of secular materialism, is leading to a search for deeper meaning and purpose, creating an opportunity for a resurgence of Christian faith.
The need for an imaginative and intellectually rich faith
To meet the needs of a culture in crisis, churches must combine intellect and imagination. Merely providing rational arguments for God's existence is not enough. People want a story that makes sense of their lives and appeals to their imagination. The church should embrace the distinctiveness and 'weirdness' of Christianity, standing apart from culture to offer a counter-narrative. Additionally, the church must cultivate a community of grace, countering cancel culture and offering a place of belonging where the fullness of life in Christ is experienced.
Science and the case for a loving creator
Science, rather than disproving the existence of a loving creator, actually presents evidence that points towards it. The remarkable fine-tuning of the universe for life, the emergence of consciousness, and the complexity of life itself are all areas where science raises questions that go beyond materialistic explanations. These phenomena support the idea that there is more to reality than what science alone can explain. The intersection of science and faith reveals a need for a larger, transcendent explanation that a loving creator can provide.
Preparing for a renewal of Christianity
As the tide turns, the church must be ready to receive those seeking meaning and purpose. By embracing the intellectual and imaginative aspects of faith, maintaining the distinctiveness of Christianity, and fostering a community of grace, the church can create an environment that counters the prevailing cultural narratives. By offering a story that resonates with the human longing for meaning, the church can play a crucial role in a potential renewal of Christian faith in the West.
A little less than two decades ago, you might walk past a bookstore and see The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins featured among the bestsellers. The mid to late 2000’s were the heyday for the New Atheists, a small cohort of scientists and philosophers who were convinced religion was both untrue and a bad influence in the world. At the time, it was easy to see the rise of the New Atheists as the latest peak of secularism, a sign that public belief in religion was long gone, and there was no going back.
Where we sit now in 2024, we can see that the New Atheist movement fell apart due to internal disagreement and concern about its own influence on the world. According to our guest Justin Brierley, public opinions towards religion are complex and mixed, not nearly as negative as the New Atheist movement would have anticipated. In fact, there are many signs that a Christian renewal is underway. From notable conversions of high-profile individuals to the rise of secular thinkers defending Christianity to the increasing skepticism that science and atheist worldviews can answer our most important questions, Justin observes that the Christian story is far from dead.
Justin Brierley is a writer, speaker, and podcaster committed to building dialogue between Christians and non-Christians. His first book was titled Unbelievable? Why, after ten years of talking with atheists, I'm still a Christian and in September 2023 he published his second book, The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God.
Zach interviews Justin in this episode, and the conversation ends with several fascinating questions: will there be a renewal of Christianity and belief in God? If so, are the churches prepared for it? How can the Christian world transcend tribalism and culture wars to welcome a new batch of seekers?
