Fr. Mike, Catholic priest, discusses the grave sins of polygamy, incest, sexual abuse, and free union, emphasizing that God gives hope to those experiencing wounds or guilt. Topics discussed include the contradiction of polygamy to the moral law and God's plan, the condemnation of incestuous relationships, the challenges faced by those wanting to become Catholic but required to repudiate multiple spouses, the negative effects of divorce and cohabitation, and the importance of commitment and love in marriage.
Polygamy undermines the equal personal dignity of men and women and goes against the moral law.
Incest and sexual abuse corrupt family relationships and violate the physical and moral integrity of children, while free unions weaken fidelity and destroy the idea of family.
Deep dives
Polygamy and Repudiation of Wives
Polygamy is not in accord with the moral law and contradicts the plan of God, emphasizing the equal personal dignity of men and women. Those converting to the gospel need to honor their obligations towards former wives and children.
Incest and Sexual Abuse
Incest, as intimate relations between relatives or in-laws, and sexual abuse by adults entrusted with the care of children, are grave offenses that corrupt family relationships and violate the physical and moral integrity of the young.
Free Union and Trial Marriages
A so-called free union, where couples refuse to commit to a juridical and public bond, offends the dignity of marriage, weakens fidelity, and destroys the idea of family. Trial marriages are fallacious and cannot ensure mutual sincerity, fidelity, or protection from the inconstancy of desires.
The Catechism continues on with other offenses against the dignity of marriage and concludes our look at the sixth commandment. Polygamy, incest, sexual abuse, and free union are reviewed in detail. Fr. Mike highlights that these sins are grave, but God gives hope to all of us experiencing wounds or guilt. We have the opportunity to change in order to live in accordance with the Gospel. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2387-2400.
This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
