Deep dives
Exploring the Bronx Through Personal Experience
The Bronx is portrayed as a vibrant and essential part of New York City, often misunderstood or overlooked. The exploration of the Bronx is framed through the perspective of Ian Frazier, who has dedicated years to walking its streets and capturing the essence of the borough. Through personal anecdotes and detailed descriptions, Frazier highlights experiences such as following the smell of cookies from the Stelladoro Bakery, which became a metaphor for his connection to the neighborhood. This intimate exploration illuminates both the physical landscape and the emotional ties held by those who live there, challenging prevailing stereotypes about the Bronx.
The Historical Significance of Infrastructure
The podcast delves into the impact of infrastructure on the Bronx's identity, particularly focusing on the High Bridge and Cross Bronx Expressway. These constructions, while marvels of engineering, have drastically altered the local community, leading to increased traffic and diminished quality of life. Frazier discusses how the expressway transformed the Bronx into a thoroughfare rather than a destination, resulting in social and environmental consequences for its residents. The juxtaposition of these infrastructural developments against the historical significance of the Bronx emphasizes the ongoing struggle between progress and community wellbeing.
The Birth of Hip-Hop in the Bronx
The Bronx is celebrated as the birthplace of hip-hop, a cultural movement that arose in response to the borough's struggles. Ian Frazier recounts the origin of hip-hop in Cedar Playground, where DJ Cool Herc hosted block parties that attracted the attention of budding artists. These gatherings, known for their loud music and energy, served as a powerful counter-narrative to the challenges faced by the community, allowing residents to express their resilience. The emergence of hip-hop reflects the creativity and vibrancy of the Bronx, demonstrating how a challenging environment can give rise to influential cultural movements.
“I like to look at places that people aren’t seeing,” says Ian Frazier, the author of “Great Plains” and “Travels in Siberia,” and the new “Paradise Bronx: The Life and Times of New York’s Greatest Borough.” “Not only do people not know about” the Bronx, “but what they know about it is wrong.” The book, which was excerpted recently in The New Yorker, came out of fifteen years’ worth of long walks through the city streets, and on a hot morning recently, he invited a colleague, Zach Helfand, to join him on foot. They admired the majestic Romanesque-style stonework of the High Bridge, where Edgar Allan Poe would walk while mourning his wife, in the eighteen-forties; the impressively tangled connections of the interstate highway system that engineers once called “chicken guts”; and walked east to the Cedar Playground, which has a strong claim to being the birthplace of hip-hop.
Note: The segment misstates the year Edgar Allan Poe moved to the Bronx. Poe moved to New York City in 1844, and to the Bronx in 1846.
