Deep dives
Ocean's dream of joining the military was shattered due to a medical condition
Ocean Subiona had always wanted to be a soldier and joined the JROTC program in high school to pursue his dream of becoming a helicopter pilot. However, when he tried to enlist, a military doctor noticed his congenital ptosis, a disorder that affects his eyelids, and deemed him medically disqualified. This devastating blow left Ocean feeling lost and unfulfilled. He eventually found fulfillment as a firefighter, but the desire to serve in the military never left him. Years later, he was given another chance and a different doctor allowed him to achieve his dream, becoming a combat medic with the National Guard.
Russell's pride in Ocean's resilience and success
Russell Subiyona, Ocean's father, reflects on the challenges his son faced when his military dreams were shattered. Despite the disappointment, Russell admired Ocean's determination to find another path and supported him as he became a firefighter. When Ocean was finally given the opportunity to pursue his military ambitions after seven years, Russell expressed profound pride in his son's resilience and the man he has become. Ocean now serves as a combat medic with the National Guard while still working as a firefighter, proving that perseverance and resilience can lead to the fulfillment of long-held dreams.
