The High Price of Desperation

Many migrants attempting to cross the Central Mediterranean face incredible risks, paying exorbitant fees to smugglers in order to flee war, conflict, persecution, deprivation, and poverty in their home countries. The cost of the journey includes not only the price of a place on a boat, which can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand, but also the expenses of reaching Libya and surviving the treacherous journey. People endure extortion, forced labor, abuse, and even death along the way. Women and girls face unique dangers, including sexual violence. Despite the dangers, the hope for a better life and freedom drives these migrants to take the risk.
