Fix Now, Foreshadow Later
- If you write yourself into a corner, temporarily use a deus ex machina then go back and foreshadow it into the story.
- Alternatively rewrite the intervening scenes so the characters can plausibly escape without magical fixes.
Make Tiny Changes To Avoid Impossibility
- Look for the smallest change to circumstances that lets a character exploit an opportunity and reverse the situation.
- Make the tweak small so characters still have to struggle and shine at the climax.
Exploit The Setting
- Re-examine the setting and natural environment for elements your character can exploit to resolve problems plausibly.
- Use research to discover historically or technologically plausible tools and add them earlier to avoid dead ends.
