For most of us, housing is primarily used as a home. But for financial and landlord capitalists, housing is, first and foremost, an instrument for extracting wealth and maximizing profits. The valuing of housing as a means for profit-maximization is contradictory to the valuing of housing as home, and increasingly under capitalism, financial capital has hyper-commodified this most basic human necessity. Ismaail Qaiyim, a participant in Charlotte, North Carolina's Housing Justice Coalition, joins me in a conversation on housing under capitalism and the various roles that race plays in the unequal distribution of housing in the US.
