What if the difference between surviving and falling apart in the face of trauma was a simple conversation? Prepare to be enlightened by our guest, Tony Harrison, the founder of the Public Safety Group. Tony taps into his extensive experience, from being a dispatcher and deputy sheriff to a consultant, to illustrate the power of resilience and compassion in dealing with trauma. He stresses the rising issue of compassion fatigue and the importance of discussing our experiences to develop resilience, especially for public safety professionals.

Tony recounts his time as a 911 dispatcher during the Oklahoma City bombing. His conscious decision to become a survivor, rather than a victim of the event, sheds light on the critical role of resilience. We also discuss the part institutions and systems play in offering resources to develop resilience, as well as how sharing traumatic experiences builds resilience.  His insights provide a roadmap not just for those in public safety but for anyone grappling with trauma and seeking to build resilience.

Tony is the President of The Public Safety Group. He has more than 30 years of public safety communications experience and has lectured over 20,000 public safety professionals. Tony spent many years with the Oklahoma City Police Department’s communications division and was the supervisor on duty during the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building. He also holds the distinction of Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) life member and emergency number professional (ENP) from the National Emergency Number Association (NENA).
