The Importance of Oral Traditions and Memory
Oral traditions and memory play a crucial role in preserving cultural knowledge and transmitting information in ancient societies. Oral poetry, incantations, and mnemonic devices aid in the memory and transmission of important stories, laws, and ceremonies. Invoking the muses before the start of a poem was a common practice, highlighting the significance of memory in oral traditions. Scholars have confirmed that orature, as opposed to literature, provides a more accurate transmission of ancient information, as it avoids the errors introduced by scribes. The importance of memory is also reflected in the goddess Nemosene, who is associated with memory and invoked by epic poets. The power of memory is still evident in modern cultures, as evidenced by the continued mourning rituals performed by women and the preservation of oral traditions in various communities.
The Goddess Aphrodite
Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, originated from Phoenician culture, specifically the goddess Astarte. She was imported into Greek mythology and became associated with the sea, birth, and sexuality. Aphrodite's origin stories varied, with some accounts suggesting that she emerged from the severed genitals of Uranus that fell into the sea, while others claim her birth from the union of Zeus and Dione. The Greek mythological traditions incorporated Aphrodite into their narratives, but she never truly belonged among the Olympian gods. Attempts were made to explain her Greek origins, such as tracing her journey from the island of Cythera to Cyprus, but historical evidence points to her Phoenician roots.
The Survival of Ancient Practices
Despite attempts to suppress ancient practices, certain traditions persisted among Greeks and other cultures. Local shrines, especially those honoring female deities, retained their importance and continued to be centers of worship. Women played significant roles in various practices, such as birth rituals and funeral rites. Mourning ceremonies, often led by women, included lamentations, processions, and rituals performed at gravesites. These traditions endured into the Christian era, highlighting the enduring power of ancient belief systems and the need to mourn collectively and mark life passages.
It is our pleasure, once again, to present a fascinating conversation with Max Dashu!
Max Dashu has championed the various lost histories of women and championed female-centric civilizations for decades. Max Dashu founded the Suppressed Histories Archives in January of 1970 to research and document women's history on a global scale.
In today's episode, we discuss chapter one of Max's new book Women In Greek Mythography. Focused on the Titanides, the pre-Olympian goddesses, chapter one explores their original stories and the later patriarchal revisions. Female-centric, the mythology of the Titanides explained how the universe came into being, with goddesses central to that understanding.
