Deep dives
The Dominance of TSMC in the Global Tech Industry
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) stands as the world's largest producer of computer chips, crucial for various technologies ranging from smartphones to advanced artificial intelligence systems. Its immense influence in the global tech industry is primarily due to its innovative manufacturing processes and partnerships with multiple chip designers. TSMC's unique business model, which allows it to produce chips for different companies, has contributed to its unmatched economies of scale, making it difficult for competitors to match their pricing or invest similarly in research and development. Morris Zhang’s visionary leadership has been a driving force behind TSMC’s success, shaping it into a global powerhouse within the semiconductor manufacturing realm.
Morris Zhang's Journey to TSMC's Founding
Morris Zhang, originally aiming to be a writer, transitioned to engineering after recognizing better opportunities in the field, ultimately earning degrees from MIT. His early career at Texas Instruments was marked by a commitment to excellence, which earned him a reputation as a perfectionist who significantly improved production yield. Despite his successes, Zhang's innovative ideas about separating chip design from manufacturing were overlooked by Texas Instruments, prompting him to leave after two decades. In 1985, he accepted an offer to lead Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute, which ultimately set the stage for the founding of TSMC in 1987, thanks to his relentless pursuit of innovation and governmental support.
KT Lee's Role in Taiwan's Semiconductor Boom
KT Lee, a pivotal figure in Taiwan's economic development, played a critical role in the establishment of TSMC and is often referred to as the 'father of Taiwan's economic miracle.' His pragmatic approach to economic management, which emphasized gradual liberalization and support for the tech sector, helped create an environment conducive to semiconductor production. Lee’s vision included integrating Taiwan’s economy with the United States through technology, steering Taiwan toward producing advanced electronics. The partnership between Lee's governmental initiatives and Zhang's technological expertise helped TSMC secure essential funding and support, positioning it as a leader in the global semiconductor market.
The person who did most of the work creating the company people around the world almost immediately associate with Taiwan has no ancestors from this island, was not born here, didn't go to school here, and only came here for the first time when he was almost 40 years old.
But, of course, Morris Chang 張忠謀 didn't create Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) out of thin air, nor was he the sole person who set up the famous Taiwanese microchip powerhouse. He had partners, backers, and more than a little assistance from the Taiwanese government.
As of this recording, the retired Morris Chang has a net worth of over US$3 billion and remains incredibly active, despite celebrating his 93rd birthday in early July. Check out this fascinating story on Formosa Files.
