Importance of Family Viewership and Its Impact
Viewing television shows as a family can create lasting memories and foster conversations among family members. The nostalgic reflections on childhood favorites highlight how shared viewing experiences can strengthen familial bonds. Shows like 'Family Matters' and 'The Simpsons' serve as examples of programming that could spark discussions and shared humor within family settings. The podcast emphasizes that, through these collective viewing experiences, families develop inside jokes and shared cultural references that enhance their connections.
Engaging with the Great Commission
The Matthew 28 exercise serves as a critical tool for discussing the Great Commission and its implications for disciple-making. Participants are encouraged to analyze the four explicit commands from Jesus, which include going, making disciples, baptizing, and teaching obedience. This exercise prompts individuals to reflect on how their church practices may diverge from these instructions, revealing insights into the often passive approaches of modern church culture. The importance of immediate baptism and proactive disciple-making, as mandated by Jesus, contrasts sharply with the tendency to prioritize membership classes and delayed actions.
Reexamining Church Practices
Through group discussions, participants explore what they do instead of following Jesus' commands, revealing common themes such as creating programs instead of making disciples and waiting for professional leaders to handle baptisms. This reflective practice aims to shift paradigms by encouraging a deeper understanding of active disciple-making, emphasizing that anyone can baptize and teach. The discussions highlight how church culture often complicates simplicity in following Jesus' directives, fostering a sense of urgency in returning to foundational practices. This process not only identifies gaps but also empowers individuals to take ownership of their roles in disciple-making, challenging conventional notions of church involvement.
In this episode, Cory and Brian walk through a tool that we use regularly in the Missionary Pathway Huddle that we call The Matthew 28 Exercise. This tool helps us explore the four commands that Jesus gave within the Great Commission and is a fast way to help people consider what we've been called to do as followers of Jesus versus what our church paradigms in which we've existed have done instead. This exercise is not intended to criticize everything we've done. We know that we need many of the activities that the church has leaned into. However, these activities don't help us live into a movement mentality. The Matthew 28 exercise helps us begin the process of shifting paradigms into disciple-making movement mentality.
