VLEX Announces Vincent AI - A Solution to Verify and Retrieve Legal Case Information
VLEX has launched Vincent AI, a product designed to address the problem of large language models generating inaccurate information. Vincent AI allows users to ask legal questions and retrieve actual quotations from real cases, statutes, and regulations. The platform provides users with a block quote that directly answers the query, allowing for verification of the information. By mapping the text of actual cases, statutes, and regulations before it reaches the large language models, VLEX ensures a higher level of accuracy and minimizes "hallucinations" of information. With its extensive legal data from Fastcase, VLEX offers a comprehensive solution for legal research, enabling faster and more reliable information retrieval for lawyers.
Sally: A Nonprofit Alliance Working Towards Universal Legal Tagging and Data Interoperability
Damien Riel is part of the leadership team at Sally, a nonprofit organization focused on developing a universal system for legal tagging. Sally's taxonomy aims to standardize how legal concepts and data are categorized, both in terms of substantive law and the business of law. By assigning tags to various legal concepts and elements, Sally enables interoperability among different legal systems and databases. This allows for seamless data exchange and retrieval, facilitating more efficient legal research and information sharing. With over 14,400 tags covering a wide range of legal topics, Sally's tagging system has gained recognition and adoption by major legal tech companies, law firms, and organizations worldwide.
All The Music: Democratizing the Law and Challenging Copyright Infringement Lawsuits
Damien Riel is the co-founder of All the Music LLC, an initiative that involved generating and placing 471 billion melodies into the public domain to challenge copyright infringement lawsuits. Damien's TED Talk on the topic has sparked a shift in copyright infringement cases, with defendants following his argument that certain melodies are unoriginal and therefore uncapurable. Since his talk, defendants such as Katie Perry, Led Zeppelin, and Ed Sheeran have used his arguments to successfully defend themselves in court. Damien's work with All the Music demonstrates the potential for creative solutions and the impact they can have on the legal industry.
The Evolving Legal Landscape and the Impact on Law School Education and Training
The increasing use of generative AI and the evolving legal landscape raises important questions about the future of law school education and training. As large language models like GPT-3 become capable of quickly retrieving and generating legal information, traditional tasks performed by associates, such as researching cases and drafting briefs, may be significantly automated. This raises the question of whether prospective law students will still find value in pursuing a law degree if the roles of associates are diminished. Additionally, law firms and academia must consider how to train the next generation of lawyers to navigate and leverage these emerging technologies. The ability to connect disparate fields, critical thinking, and creativity fostered by a liberal arts education may become even more vital in a future legal landscape influenced by advanced AI technologies.
Our guest today is Damien Riehl, vice president and Solutions Champion at vLex, a platform using artificial intelligence solutions to streamline workflows and provide lawyers with greater access to knowledge and resources. Damien was a tech attorney for more than 10 years when he made the leap to Thomson Reuters as Senior Product Strategist, where he developed innovative legal technology involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing. Inspired by Ed Walters’ efforts to democratize the law, Damien later joined Fastcase, where he served various roles building out legal tools and systems. In his current position at vLex, Damien helps lead the design, development, and expansion of products. Additionally, Damien is part of the leadership team at the Standards Advancement for the Legal Industry (SALI) Alliance. He is also co-founder of All the Music LLC, a project that involved copyrighting 471 billion melodies and placing them in the public domain. In 2019, Damien delivered a TED Talk in which he describes this process and offers a new way to handle copyright infringement lawsuits in music.
In today’s conversation, Damien discusses vLex's newest product—Vincent AI, his decision to leave practice and join Thomson Reuters, the genesis of All the Music, and the future of teaching legal research.
