Deep dives
Becoming Smart Enough to Start a Business
To overcome the belief of not being smart enough to start a business, it is important to differentiate between identity and experience. Learning is a process, not an identity. The process of learning involves becoming aware of what you don't know, understanding concepts, executing tasks, and eventually embodying knowledge as muscle memory. Instead of striving to be smart enough, approach your business like a scientist, testing causes and effects and focusing on what produces desirable outcomes. As you make progress, outsource your weaknesses and focus on your strengths.
The Importance of Beta Testing and Curiosity in Business
In the beginning phase of your business, it is crucial to embrace curiosity and beta testing. It's not about achieving immediate success, but about exploring different causes and effects, trying new ideas, and learning from mistakes. Even experienced entrepreneurs go through beta seasons when launching new ventures. By anticipating these stages and planning for curiosity and interest testing, you can refine your business approach and discover what works for you. Embrace the mindset of a beginner and be open to adjusting your strategies along the way.
Using Measurable Metrics and Celebrating Progress
Avoid measuring your worth or enoughness, as it is not quantifiable. Instead, focus on using measurable metrics to track progress and success in your business. Set clear goals and benchmarks that you can measure, allowing you to observe your growth and celebrate achievements. Remember that weaknesses are expected, and it is more important to develop and leverage your strengths. As you identify areas of weakness, outsource them and concentrate on areas where you excel. Embrace the seasons of business and enjoy the journey, celebrating each step of your progress.
This came in through a questions box I did on Instagram. I said “If I could coach you for free for 30 minutes, what would you ask?” And someone responded with “how do I overcome the belief that I'm not smart enough to start a business?”
This brought me to here behind the mic recording this podcast episode, because being smart or educated in something is a process, not an identity. Instead, may I suggest adopting the mindset of a scientist in your business, observing what causes desirable effects and what doesn't. There is a lot of value in curiosity and beta testing in the early stages of business, and how it can lead to finding what works and scaling it further.
