Deep dives
Early Life and Adoption by Antoninus Pius
Marcus Aurelius, known as a stoic philosopher, was adopted by Antoninus Pius at the age of 17 as part of a succession plan by Emperor Hadrian. He had a fortunate upbringing and received the best education and training, studying law and eventually embracing Stoicism.
Reign as Emperor and Challenges
After the death of Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius and his adopted brother Commodus became co-emperors. They faced challenges such as the Parthian War, the spread of a deadly plague, and threats from Germanic tribes. Marcus Aurelius led the army during the Germanic wars, but faced betrayal from one of his generals. Despite these difficulties, he ruled with integrity and showed respect to Commodus as his co-emperor.
Persecution of Christians and Legacy
During Marcus Aurelius' reign, Christians faced persecution, viewed as atheists by the Romans. The governor of Lyon sought advice from Marcus Aurelius regarding punishment for Christians. Although the official response was punishment with the option to denounce their faith for freedom, the persecution was brutal. Marcus Aurelius' death at the age of 59 elevated him to god-like status in Rome, leaving a complex legacy that prompts examination of both his virtues and flaws.
The history of Marcus Aurelius is rich and lined with lessons learned and troubles overcome. He would lose his father at the age of three and be adopted by one of the most powerful men in Rome. He waged war, lost loved ones, owned slaves, and persecuted Christians. He would be betrayed, lied to, and immortalized. He quietly would right down his lessons learned and strive to wake up the next day and live a little better than the last. He left behind his meditations for us which have elevated him to a level of fame to surpass all the Roman emperors but Julius Caesar himself. Hope you enjoy the History of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.
