True Crime Never Sleeps Decoding Cults: Heaven's Gate
This week we begin Season 9 of the podcast and this season we are diving into the world of cults. From the well-known to the lesser-known.
Today we're going to be looking at Heaven's Gate, which is probably one of the least well-known cults around. They were founded by Marshall Applewhite in the 1970s, and they were one of the first groups to make use of the internet as a way to recruit new members.
They were also known for their extreme belief in alien abduction and life on other planets. They were so convinced that death was just one step towards being abducted by aliens that they committed suicide together in 1997 in order to reach an alien spacecraft following Comet Hale-Bopp. The group had between 40 and 80 members at its peak, but there's still no conclusive evidence about why exactly they chose this particular comet or what happened during their final days before committing suicide.
