Baptism and communion are biblical traditions through which we communicate obedience to God and proclaim how He changed our lives. We are saved by grace alone through faith alone. However, many people confuse the symbols of our salvation with the source of our salvation. But God did not send His Son to give us more religion; He came to give us redemption.
Religion takes the symbols of our salvation, like baptism and communion, and makes them the source. Redemption does the opposite. Salvation is not built on what you do for yourself. It is a gift. Many people know religion but do not have a genuine relationship with God. Jesus came to redeem us from our sins and give us an example of how to live changed lives.
When you are saved, God no longer sees you; He sees His Son. Baptism and communion do not save you. They are outward expressions of an inward transformation. Baptism symbolizes a burial, dying to self, sin, and past, and being resurrected to newness of life. Communion proclaims you have received the blood of the Lamb.
