Deep dives
Leah Jacobson's Background and Projects
Leah Jacobson is a program coordinator for the new Masters in Catholic Women and Gender Studies at the University of St. Thomas in Houston while also being the CEO and founder of the Guiding Star Project, a nonprofit that establishes women’s health care centers across the country. Balancing these roles with raising seven children, Jacobson emphasizes the importance of providing a supportive environment for women’s health informed by her background as a Midwestern farming daughter. Her experiences growing up in farming instilled in her a profound understanding of God’s natural order, which she feels is often lost in modern urban life. She highlights a disconnect between women’s health and the reality of women's needs, advocating for a return to an understanding rooted in both faith and science.
The Need for Comprehensive Women's Health Care
The podcast discusses the significant shortcomings in the United States’ healthcare system regarding women’s health, particularly in maternal care and emotional well-being. Jacobson cites alarming statistics, revealing that the U.S. ranks poorly in maternal health outcomes compared to many developing nations. Furthermore, the mental health of young girls has deteriorated, with rising rates of depression and anxiety indicating a larger systemic issue in how women's health is approached. Jacobson argues for a shift towards recognizing the intricate relationship between physical health and emotional support to foster a more holistic approach to women's health care.
Understanding Body and Mind in Women's Health
Jacobson addresses the profound disconnect in women’s healthcare where body and mind are treated as separate entities, which often leads to medical gaslighting. Women frequently report feeling unheard in medical settings, with their symptoms dismissed, leading to a damaging internal narrative that their bodies are inherently problematic. The podcast emphasizes a need for healthcare that fosters true bodily autonomy and understanding, encouraging young girls to embrace their bodies rather than suppress symptoms with medication. The Catholic Women and Gender Studies program aims to provide a comprehensive education on women’s health that aligns with their natural functions and conditions.
Critique of Traditional Gender Studies and Feminism
The conversation critiques traditional gender studies programs and examines how they can often perpetuate misleading definitions and narratives about gender. Jacobson advocates for a Catholic approach to feminism that recognizes the value and dignity of women while promoting a clear Christian anthropology. She suggests that, while some early feminists had valuable insights, modern interpretations often risk losing the essence of true femininity. The program at the University of St. Thomas intends to explore these dimensions, combining theological insights with contemporary issues concerning gender identity and the differences between male and female roles.
