The Rise of Extremism on TikTok

A recent report highlights the alarming presence of extremist content on TikTok, revealing that neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups are actively using the platform to disseminate hate speech and recruit new members. Researchers analyzed a network of TikTok accounts and discovered that some videos, which were cleverly disguised with coded imagery, received millions of views without being flagged as violations by TikTok. For instance, emojis and captions were often leveraged to obscure direct references to hate, making it harder for the platform's automated oversight to catch them. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of TikTok's content moderation practices, especially given the youth demographic prevalent on the platform, which could easily fall prey to these harmful ideologies.
