#277 The Jewish People and the Old Testament Canon - Jimmy Akin
Oct 4, 2023
auto_awesome
Jimmy Akin, an expert on the Old Testament Canon, discusses the argument that the Jewish people should be trusted for the Old Testament canon. He highlights the multiple canonical traditions and the use of the Septuagint tradition by early Christians.
The Jewish canon of the Old Testament is not uniform, with some Jewish traditions including Deuterocanonical books.
The Council of Jamnia did not definitively fix the Jewish canon of Scripture and there is no evidence of a decision or list of books being drawn up during that time.
Deep dives
Multiple Canons Among Jewish People
Not all Jewish people have the same canon, with some including Deuterocanonical books. The canon used by rabbinic Judaism, familiar to Protestants in the 1500s, was borrowed from the Pharisee tradition. However, first-century Christians did not follow the Pharisee canonical tradition.
No Definitive Canon at Jamnia Council
Contrary to outdated scholarship, the Council of Jamnia was actually a Jewish school set up after the destruction of the temple in AD 70. This school, located in Yabneh, did not address the canon of Scripture, and there is no evidence of a decision or list of books being drawn up. The canon of the Jewish scriptures was not definitively fixed before the end of the second century, and scholarly discussion on certain books continued into the third century.

There are multiple problems with this argument.
First, not all Jewish people have the same canon. Falashas (Ethiopian Jews) have a canon including deuterocanonical books. It was rabbinic Jews that Protestants were familiar with in the 1500s, and their canon that the Reformers borrowed.
Second, as we cover elsewhere (see Day 255), there were multiple canonical traditions in t…
