Deep dives
Life and Scotland in 1274
Robert the Bruce, Scotland's warrior king, lived during a period of Scotland's history marked by growing population and economic expansion due to increased trade. Most people lived in the countryside, with growing towns and connections to European trade networks. The Scotland of 1274 was similar in size to today, with some differences in territorial boundaries.
Bruce's Lineage and Early Life
Robert Bruce hailed from an Anglo-Norman family deeply rooted in Scottish history, tracing his lineage back to Brix in Yorkshire. Born into privilege, he likely spoke Gaelic and had connections to the Western Isles and Ireland. At around 14, he witnessed the Scottish succession crisis following the death of the Maid of Norway, leading to a power vacuum.
Political Maneuvers and Alliances
In 1296, Robert Bruce initially sided with Edward I of England during the invasion of Scotland due to family dynamics and discontent with the ruling regime. However, he later defected and rebelled against English rule. Bruce's strategic alliances and shifting loyalties showcased his ambitious and politically nuanced character. His actions set the stage for his ultimate goal of claiming the Scottish throne for independence.
