Deep dives
The Emotions of Worship
The exploration of the Book of Psalms reveals its ability to articulate a wide spectrum of human emotions, such as joy, sorrow, and fear. By engaging with the Psalms, individuals can find guidance on how to embrace their emotions and grow into the people they are meant to be. The call to worship—expressing gratitude and singing joyfully—serves as a vital reminder of God’s greatness and the authenticity of human experience in worship. This dual recognition of emotion and divine majesty leads to a deeper understanding of what true worship involves.
The Nature of Worship
Worship is defined as the act of ascribing ultimate value to God, engaging the entire being—mind, will, and emotions—in the process. The Psalms illustrate that worship involves both emotional expression, such as singing and thanksgiving, and acts of submission, including bowing and kneeling before God. An important aspect to note is that genuine worship is not limited to mere rituals or emotional experiences; it must lead to a transformation in one’s life patterns and character. Thus, worship becomes a holistic engagement that deeply connects individuals with the Divine.
The Necessity of Community in Worship
Corporate worship within a community is essential for a comprehensive understanding and experience of God. Engaging in worship as part of a group allows individuals to discover aspects of God’s character that they might miss when worshiping alone. Through diverse community worship, believers can bridge cultural gaps and deepen their understanding of God’s multifaceted nature. This communal experience emphasizes the significance of shared worship, which reflects God’s presence more fully than isolated individual practices.
The Role of Gospel Rest
Understanding gospel rest is crucial for meaningful worship, as it counteracts the pressures of personal performance and moral striving. The message of the gospel emphasizes that true rest comes from accepting God's unconditional love and forgiveness, which alleviates the burden of constantly seeking approval through works. This rest transforms worship from a mere obligation into a delightful and freeing experience, ensuring that worship remains a source of joy rather than anxiety. Recognizing the ultimate rest found in God allows believers to face life’s challenges with confidence, free from the need to earn God’s favor.
On the weekend before I had surgery for thyroid cancer, I wrestled with this question: “How do you face troubles with peace?” I came to realize it’s not petitionary prayer that helps you face troubles.
Of course the Bible is filled with petition, where you go to God and make your needs known. And you should do that. But the ultimate and main way to handle the troubles of life is not just through petitionary prayer, but through worship.
Psalm 95 is the classic text about worship. It tells us almost everything we need to know: 1) what is worship? 2) why should we worship? and 3) how can we worship?
This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on July 7, 2002. Series: Psalms: Disciples of Grace. Scripture: Psalm 95:1-11.
