Deep dives
Being human: Embracing our true selves and slowing down
Being human is about fully embracing and accepting who we are as individuals. It involves removing distractions from our lives and slowing down to truly connect with ourselves and others. By being compassionate and serving others, we not only fulfill our own need to be seen, but also create connections and find happiness.
Seeing humans: Breaking down biases and truly seeing others
Seeing humans involves stepping out of our comfort zones and engaging with people outside of our familiar circles. By actively listening and seeking to understand those who think, vote, or look differently from us, we can break down biases and find common ground. When we truly see people, conflicts can be avoided, and a path to peace and understanding can be created.
Freeing humans: Taking action to make a difference
Freeing humans requires moving from conviction to action. It means taking the necessary steps to make a positive impact in the lives of others. Whether it's supporting refugees, advocating for justice, or lifting others up, true freedom comes from actively working towards creating a better world for everyone.
Rediscovering Wonder and Embracing the Unknown
In today's day and age, we have lost the sense of wonder that we had as children. We no longer embrace the unknown and instead rely on technology to provide us with instant answers and directions. To reclaim that sense of wonder, we need to disconnect from our devices, get lost in the world, and allow ourselves to experience the joy of discovery once again.
Seeing People Without Biases and Building Compassion
In a world where we often see people through screens and filters, it is important to truly see them face-to-face. This means overcoming our biases and preconceived notions, and engaging in meaningful, uncomfortable conversations with others. By walking with people and focusing on their humanity rather than their opinions, we can foster compassion and understanding, allowing us to break down barriers and build genuine connections.
To ring in 2024 I’m excited to revisit an incredibly encouraging and human conversation I had with Carlos Whittaker earlier in 2023. More often than not “productivity minded” people can place too much emphasis on the weeks leading up to and the first few weeks of the New Year. I wanted to reverse that trend and focus on a conversation that reminds us of the importance of human connections and deep relationships in creating a life of contentment and true fulfillment.
In How to Human, Carlos offers a fresh vision for becoming the best versions of ourselves. We can refuse to let disagreements define us. We can say no to becoming upset, rage-filled humans and say yes to fuller, happier lives. It begins as we make the shift from “me” to “we” to “everybody” in a three-part journey to be human, see fellow humans, and free those around us.
This conversation was a real inspiration for me as Carlos and I unpacked the themes and messages of his book. Carlos reminds listeners that it's more powerful to not stand on issues, but to walk with people. That journey of discovering the true value of relationships and the beauty and hope that bind us together rather than focusing on the polarizing divisions is a message I'm so excited for listeners to explore further in this episode.
