The Influence of Nostalgia on Songwriting
Sasami's songwriting for 'In Love With a Memory' is deeply rooted in nostalgia, drawing inspiration from personal experiences, particularly her memories of her mother's singing during family gatherings. This nostalgic influence is echoed in the lyrical themes that reflect a longing to revisit cherished moments in life and relationships. During the creative process, the song embodies a cinematic quality, capturing the feelings associated with a blossoming relationship marked by long, intimate conversations on open highways. Sasami's reflections on moments spent with her family and connections to her upbringing are evident, adding a personal touch to the song's narrative.
Collaborative Creation with Rostam
Collaboration plays a pivotal role in the development of 'In Love With a Memory,' particularly with Grammy-winning producer Rostam. Their creative partnership allowed Sasami to explore her classical roots and incorporate dramatic elements into the music, leading to innovative arrangements. Rostam encouraged her to embrace bold lyrical statements, pushing her creative boundaries, which helped shape the song’s profound emotional depth. This collaboration not only enhanced the production quality but also inspired Sasami to incorporate layered vocals, highlighting the interplay of different perspectives within the song.
Embracing Change and New Experiences
The themes of change and personal growth resonate throughout Sasami's songwriting, especially in her decision to relocate and step into new artistic territories. The song examines a moment of transition, where one character yearns to recapture the past while the other seeks independence, symbolizing the tension between holding on and letting go. Sasami's writing reflects her own journey of moving away from familiar surroundings, representing a significant leap into the unknown to rediscover inspiration. This internal struggle and the interplay between longing and self-discovery seamlessly contribute to the overall narrative of 'In Love With a Memory,' encapsulating the balance between nostalgia and growth.
Sasami is a singer, songwriter and producer who grew up in Los Angeles. But now she’s based in Northern California, and as you’ll hear in this episode, that’s significant. Sasami went to school for classical French horn. She was in the band Cherry Glazerr, and she’s had a lot of collaborations with other artists on their projects and her own. Collaboration is at the heart of the song that I talked to her about for this episode. It’s called “In Love With A Memory,” and it features Clairo on vocals, and it was co-produced with Grammy-winning producer Rostam. The song is on Sasami’s third album, Blood on the Silver Screen, which is out March 2025. Coming up, you’ll hear the original voice memos that she recorded for this song back in the fall of 2022. You’ll also hear the demo she made in Garageband after that, and then how she and Rostam turned that demo into the final version, a duet with Clairo.
