Knowing the Path When You Can't Predict the Future
One of the struggles people face with clutter is the tendency to want to predict the future. They hold onto things for potential future projects or out of fear of scarcity. However, trying to predict the future leads to frustration because it is not possible. Not being able to predict the future, people end up accumulating more items without using them. Holding onto items for the future negatively impacts the present and future as it results in more clutter and wasted belongings. The key is to focus on the path, which involves identifying the steps to decluttering and organizing, such as dealing with trash, handling the easy stuff first, going through the five-step decluttering process, and implementing the container concept. By following this path, individuals can achieve a clutter-free and manageable home.
Finding Motivation in the Path
Focusing on the end goal of a decluttered home can feel overwhelming and discouraging when faced with a cluttered space. Instead, it is more effective to concentrate on the steps involved in the process. By taking small actions, such as looking, assessing the situation, and gradually making decisions, the overwhelming distance between the current state of the home and the desired outcome becomes more manageable. The power lies in knowing that there is a path and understanding each step along the way. This not only removes the ambiguity but also provides a clear direction to follow, making the journey less overwhelming and more achievable.
The Power of Knowing the Process
Having a clear understanding of the process of decluttering brings a sense of certainty and motivates action. Knowing the five-step decluttering process (trash, easy stuff, the five-question decluttering process, the one-in-one-out concept, and the container concept), individuals gain confidence and reduce overwhelm. By following these steps, progress is guaranteed. Each step, such as managing trash, dealing with procrastination clutter, asking decluttering questions, implementing the one-in-one-out rule, and utilizing the container concept, contributes to the overall goal of a decluttered and organized home. Knowing the process ensures that every action taken is a step in the right direction, reinforcing motivation and achieving the desired outcome.
Sustaining Progress with Basic Habits
Alongside the decluttering process, basic habits play a crucial role in maintaining a clutter-free home. Emphasizing habits such as doing the dishes every day and engaging in five-minute pick-ups helps prevent the accumulation of clutter and keeps the home under control. These simple habits, when consistently practiced, free up time and positively impact the overall state of the home. By knowing that these habits are essential parts of the path to a clutter-free home, individuals can find motivation and prioritize these actions, ultimately leading them to a more organized and manageable living space.
One of the biggest struggles many people face when decluttering is that they want to (and try to) predict the future in order to know what to keep and what to declutter. Since it isn't possible to predict the future, decluttering paralysis can happen. Today I'm talking about how knowing the path and how it will work out as I declutter helps me scratch the itch of needing/wanting to know the future.
