Medical Evacuation Train: Providing Emergency Transport and Treatment in Conflict Zones
In Ukraine, a hospital train has been created to provide emergency transport and treatment to patients in the middle of conflict zones. The train, a collaboration between Medsansan Frontier and the Ukrainian Railways, was designed using eight railway carriages from the 1980s. The carriages were modified to include an intensive care unit and other necessary equipment. Since March 2022, the train has been making weekly trips, successfully transferring injured patients to safer hospitals.
FieldReady: Using Local Manufacturing and Innovation to Assist in Humanitarian Crises
FieldReady is an organization that focuses on rebuilding and providing assistance in humanitarian disasters using local manufacturing and innovation. With a team of engineers and makers, FieldReady works on-site to repair broken equipment, utilize 3D printing, and create custom solutions to address specific needs. Their projects have included fixing hospitals' broken equipment on the Turkey-Syria border and creating life-saving devices from local resources.
Medi-Tel: A Telepresence Robot for Remote Medical Assistance
Medi-Tel is a robotic platform developed by the University of Sheffield that aims to provide medical assistance in hazardous environments where it may not be safe for humans to enter. Equipped with cameras and robotic arms, the robot can be remotely controlled to assess and treat patients, using tools such as auto injectors and thermometers. Although still a prototype, the Medi-Tel has shown potential in providing medical aid in dangerous or inaccessible areas.
In the midst of a crisis, sometimes the solution you need isn’t obvious. Today we meet the inventors who found fascinating fixes amid the chaos and destruction of disasters.
We visit the hospital that was painstakingly constructed inside a train, to treat Ukrainian civilians in a war zone.
We follow a team in Fiji who have created a mobile workshop, designed to travel to remote villages after natural disasters and repair and make items on the spot.
Finally we look at a medical robot that could soon treat injured people in places it’s too dangerous for human rescuers to enter.
