Most people buy shares hoping for a capital gain and we do not currently have a capital gains tax in New Zealand. Shares are usually a capital asset and any gains the seller gets on the share sale are non-taxable income (as long as the shares were held with the intention of a long-term investment). But what about dividends? Chances are the IRD already know about some of these.
